| BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS: | More than just members of a large family, the Beagle Boys (as they are collectively known) are a family clan of Organized Criminals, hence the name "Beagle Boys, Incorporated" (as is labelled on their sweaters). Though, since they often bungle their crimal activities, some might argue that they are more 'disorganized' than 'organized.' Most of the male members of the Beagle Boys wear orange sweaters, blue trousers and caps, and all of the members of the Beagle clan wear black masks. Ma Beagle is tough-as-nails and brawny, and often bakes special treats which have hacksaws, hand grenades and machine guns obviously baked within, which easily pass prison security to aid the boys in their escapes from jail. While they do often commit other crimes, their primary goal (that for which Carl Barks first created them) is stealing the gold from $crooge McDuck's Money Bin. Though they usually work alone (only with fellow Beagles), they have been known to team-up with other criminals like Magica de Spell, Bad Pete or Mad Madam Mim, or hire out their services to such as Flintheart Glomgold. They are often easily defeated by the cunning of $crooge and his nephews, Donald Duck, and Huey, Dewey & Louie or by Super Goof, and even Mickey Mouse, Daisy Duck and her own nieces, April, May & June, and Grandma Duck. Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys were featured regularly on Disney's DuckTales. | ||
| HISTORICAL FACTS: | Created by Carl Barks as a bungling band of thuggish beagle thieves. In their first tale from the classic "WDC&S" #134 Donald Duck story, "The Terror of the Beagle Boys" they wore placards, but had no designated numbers. In the comics they usually bore no specific names and their count was usually 3, 4 or 6, though there have been as many as 30. Nor did they bear any specific physical differences other than their arrest card placards which were most consistantly a combination of 1s, 6s and 7s. Some noted differences were 176-167 likes poetry and is leader of the clan 176-671 is generally smarter and tougher; 176-761 is known for a special appreciation for prunes and his curious culinary tastes (i.e. catsup on ice cream or peanut butter pizza with gravy). In the DuckTales series there were seven leading Beagles, all with different looks and personalities: Babyface, Baggy, Bankjob, Bigtime, Bouncer, Bugle, and Burger, along with their "mother" Ma Beagle. In these stories, typically Ma, Bigtime, or Bankjob act as the clan leader. Burger's main character trait is a large appetite, although it is for any food, not just prunes. In some comicbook stories, especially those by Vic Lockman, which ran in their own title comics "The Beagle Boys" (1964 - 1979) and "The Beagle Boys vs. Uncle $crooge" (1979 - 1980), the Beagle Boys were often directed by Grandpa Beagle [G-176], and they had a mascot and sentry in the form of Ratty the Alley Cat. In Italian stories, the Beagle Boys are known as "Banda Bassotti" (the "Dachshund Band or Gang) and their pet is a "real" Dachshund (bassotto) dog named Ottoperotto (meaning: 8 x 8) which explain his placard which reads "64." Ottoperotto is a creation of Pier Carpi from "Topolino Almanacco" issue in 1964. Occassionally other Beagle relatives were presented in stories. These Beagles had actual names, though the names were usually characteristic of their criminal specialty (i.e., "Einstein Beagle," "Intellectual [I-176]," "Supersensitive [S-176]," "Stoolie-123 Beagle," "Lippy the Vintriloquist," "Uncle Nitwitz," "Psycho-8 [P-8]," "Auntie Beagle" and "Granny Beagle," etc.). Various and sundry cousins, sisters, aunts, uncles and even Grandpappy Beagle #1 (not Grandpa Beagle) appears in "The Beagle Boys" #23. Most of these clan members made only one-shot appearances, but some, like "Intellectual-176" showed up quite often. He probably corresponds most closely to "Brainy Beagle" from "DuckTales." Two sets of "Beagle Babes" have appeared in tales related to the Beagle Boys. First there was a trio of little girls (one of whom was named Beatrice) who appeared in "Walt Disney's Comics and Stories" #345, the same age as the Beagle Brats and April, May & June. The other set appeared in the "DuckTales" episode "The Good Mudduhs" who were older and given the names and accompanying attributes of Boom-Boom [382-238], Bouffant [767-171] and Babydoll [776-177]. All six of these "babes" wore the Beagle Boys, Inc. trademark masks. The Beagle Brats appeared in the quarter-hour episode titled "Take Me Out of the Ballgame." Huey, Dewey, Louie, Webby and Doofus were on the Duckburg Little League team, The Woodchucks, and the visiting team was the Beagle Brats with Ma Beagle as their coach. In this case there were far more than the usual three brats seen in comics, and whole the team wore the trademark orange sweaters, blue trousers, mask, and bore a white placard across their chests, however there were no numbers written on them. Also on the team was at least one Beagle Brat 'girl.' | ||
